A truly vibrant downtown is one where residents, workers, business owners, and visitors all feel safe, supported, and seen. As downtown Madison evolves with shifting urban dynamics, maintaining a safe and secure public realm is a foundational priority for the BID.

Safety isn’t achieved through enforcement alone—it requires a holistic, proactive approach that combines environmental design, hospitality, smart infrastructure, and deep community partnerships. We work collaboratively with the City of Madison, local law enforcement, property owners, and social service providers to ensure our district remains open, accessible, and secure around the clock. We utilize the principles of SafeGrowth—integrating crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) into our urban planning and streetscape management. Through intentional design of our physical environment, we can deter undesirable activity and foster community pride.
